Located at 2670 S Rodney French Blvd, New Bedford, MA 02744, Fort Taber Park (also known as Fort Rodman Park) is a stunning seaside destination that combines breathtaking ocean views, rich military history, and endless recreational opportunities. Stretching across 47 acres along the city’s southern coastline, this park is where history, nature, and community come together, making it one of New Bedford’s most iconic outdoor attractions.

Whether you’re a history buff, a beach lover, or someone looking for a peaceful spot to watch the sunset over Buzzards Bay, Fort Taber Park offers something for everyone.

A Park Steeped in History

Fort Taber Park’s roots trace back to the mid-19th century, when construction began on Fort Rodman, a coastal defense fortification built to protect New Bedford’s harbor during times of war. The original fort made of granite and brick was designed to withstand attacks from sea-based artillery and remains a significant reminder of America’s maritime defense history.

The site’s name, “Fort Taber,” honors Captain Charles Taber, a local military leader and philanthropist. Though the fort itself was never completed to full operational standards, its presence became a symbol of the city’s dedication to national security and community resilience.

Today, visitors can still explore parts of the historic fort’s structure and visit the Fort Taber-Fort Rodman Military Museum, located within the park grounds. The museum provides fascinating insights into the city’s military past, including exhibits on local veterans, military artifacts, and historical photographs that bring New Bedford’s role in American history to life.

Breathtaking Ocean Views

Fort Taber Park sits directly on the shores of Buzzards Bay, offering some of the most spectacular ocean views in southeastern Massachusetts. Visitors can enjoy panoramic vistas of the harbor, with sailboats drifting across the horizon and gentle waves lapping at the shore.

The coastal walking and biking paths that circle the park are a favorite among locals and visitors alike. These paved trails stretch along the water’s edge, providing a perfect route for morning jogs, romantic evening strolls, or family bike rides. Benches placed throughout the park invite you to pause, take in the sea breeze, and watch as the sun sets over the Atlantic.

Outdoor Recreation for All Ages

Beyond its history and scenic views, Fort Taber Park is a hub for outdoor recreation. Its well-maintained grounds include open fields, picnic areas, and playgrounds, making it an ideal destination for families, friends, and solo visitors looking to enjoy the outdoors.

The park’s network of paved paths connects various points of interest, including the fort, the beach, and the museum. The trails are accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, ensuring that everyone can experience the park’s natural beauty.

5. Playgrounds and Open Spaces

For families with children, the park’s modern playgrounds offer safe and engaging play equipment. The surrounding open lawns are ideal for frisbee, kite flying, or simply running around under the sun.

The Fort Taber-Fort Rodman Military Museum

Exhibits include uniforms, medals, weaponry, and photographs that tell the stories of local servicemen and women who contributed to various wars from the Civil War to modern conflicts. Visitors gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who served while learning about the region’s strategic importance throughout U.S. history.

The museum also hosts special events, ceremonies, and educational programs throughout the year, including Veterans Day and Memorial Day observances that attract visitors from across the region.

Events and Festivals by the Sea

Fort Taber Park is one of New Bedford’s favorite venues for community events. Throughout the year, the park’s open spaces transform into gathering grounds for festivals, outdoor concerts, fitness events, and charity walks.

Popular events include:

  • Fort Taber Military Encampments: Living history reenactments that bring the past to life.

  • New Bedford Summer Sound Series: Outdoor concerts with live music and local food vendors.

  • Annual Veterans Memorial Ceremony: A heartfelt event honoring those who served in the armed forces.

  • Fireworks and Family Fun Nights: Seasonal celebrations that draw locals and tourists to the waterfront.

FAQs About Our Managed IT Services

How Often Should Managed IT Providers Review Your Systems?

A quality provider should review infrastructure quarterly, addressing performance, risks, and improvement opportunities. These reviews help align IT with your business needs.

What’s The Difference Between Help Desk And Managed IT Services?

Help desk support is reactive and ticket-based. Managed IT services include proactive maintenance, monitoring, planning, and direct oversight of your entire IT environment.

Can Managed IT Services Support Hybrid Or Remote Teams?

Yes. Managed IT services include secure remote access, cloud integration, VPN support, and collaboration tools to keep distributed teams connected and protected.

What Happens During Onboarding With A New Managed IT Provider?

A full environment assessment, documentation process, and knowledge transfer occur. Systems are reviewed, risks are identified, and long-term support plans are developed.

Are Managed IT Services Still Needed With Internal IT Staff?

Yes. Many organizations use managed IT services to augment internal teams, cover gaps, add expertise, and manage areas like cybersecurity, compliance, or infrastructure.

FAQs About Our Managed IT Services

Is switching MSPs difficult? Will it impact my team?

No. We have developed and refined an onboarding process to minimize disruption for your team. We recommend an overlap period with your current provider (based on the size of your organization), so we can receive documentation and access to your systems and transition your devices to our cybersecurity tools. Your users may notice new software agents installed on their computers and will have new numbers to contact for support. Otherwise, there should be minimal disruption.

How quickly can I get started?

Staff can depart quickly and leave you in a bind. We can help. The first step is to schedule a fifteen-minute call with us to determine if our service is a fit. Next, we proceed to discovery, which could be a call or an on-site network assessment. Once this is done, we will meet to discuss our findings and to make recommendations for any system or security upgrades. We will also discuss ongoing managed services and a timetable for moving forward.

Will my current MSP be upset when I tell them I’m switching?

No one likes to lose a customer, but established firms understand this is part of working with any client. They have procedures in place to make the transition from one provider to another go smoothly. If you are concerned that your current provider won’t act professionally, that is a good reason to look for a new provider.

Do you charge more for on-site support?

Our rates are the same for on-site and remote support. We charge remote support in 15-minute increments, so remote support is ideal for simple issues. We do charge travel for on-site support, but many clients prefer scheduled visitation. Some technical issues require an on-site visit.

Do you outsource your helpdesk overseas?

MTSi has been based in Massachusetts since 1998 and our support team is located in our Fairhaven office. When you speak to someone at MTSi, they are in our Fairhaven office or working remotely from home (always in the United States).

How much does the service cost?

Compared to other professional IT companies, our pricing is very competitive. We custom tailor our pricing to each customer, so we need to get to know you and your firm before giving you a price. The first step is to schedule an introductory call with us.

What happens if my network goes down in the middle of the night?

That is completely up to you. We will work with you during implementation to understand which systems need attention off hours (if any), who needs to be notified, how we can get building access, etc. We will document this protocol and follow it for any event that occurs outside normal working hours.

I don’t have a CIO (or anyone in IT). Can you help with IT planning?

Yes. We provide an IT Roadmap for our customers and help them manage their systems lifecycle. Having End-of-Life systems is a significant cybersecurity risk, so when a manufacturer announces and End-of-Life date for a product our customers use, we meet with them well in advance of the End-of-Life date to discuss alternatives and upgrades. This helps our customers budget well in advance for upcoming projects and avoid surprise expenses that can break the budget.
